More High Water, continued

The young cypress were so densely packed that you could not have pushed your way through. I suppose you could go on foot and squeeze between them for a ways, but when you think of all the things that may be living in there you want to reconsider that idea.

Cypress trees
Roll over the picture to see one of the frightening creatures you may encounter in the swamp.

We were delighted to find that the wall of trees created an echo. That's not something you often find in Florida, so we amused ourselves by making loud noises and listening to them echo back to us. Well, at least until it occurred to us that we might be scaring off game and the hunters might start thinking of shooting US! We shut up and moved on down the trail.

Continuing on down the trail we had beautiful views of both sides. With mile after mile of pretty white flowers on one side and the mysterious shadows of the cypress on the other, we just couldn't bear to turn around and go back.

White flowers in the marsh
White flowers reached for miles amongst a scattering of cypress trees.

Ever wary of speeding airboats, we continued south along the trail. We figured in case of potential collision we could dart into the thickness of the cypress trees. We wouldn't get very deeply into them, but my narrow little Gheenoe would fit, where an airboat would not. Luckily, the only time we encountered airboats we were in a very large open area and they took a different trail.

White flowers

A closeup of the white flowers. We saw some very pretty and unusual purple flowers, too, but unfortunately I didn't get a picture of them. There were not so many of them and I kept thinking I would be able to get a picture "later".

Wrong!
